Youth Mental Health in Focus Following Tennessee Gender Care Decision
On June 18, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law prohibiting access to certain gender-affirming medical treatments for minors, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The ruling is expected to influence similar laws in other states and has generated broad national attention.
As laws and policies evolve, NATSAP remains grounded in its core values: supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all youth. Many NATSAP member programs serve LGBTQIA+ youth, including those who identify as transgender or non-binary. These programs offer affirming environments that prioritize each young person’s safety, dignity, and clinical needs.
LGBTQIA+ youth face elevated risks for mental health struggles, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. NATSAP recognizes that inclusive, individualized therapeutic care is critical to helping these young people build resilience and thrive. Regardless of shifting legal frameworks, the importance of affirming care remains clear.
NATSAP will continue to support programs that create welcoming, non-discriminatory environments, and to engage with policymakers in a way that promotes safe, compassionate, and developmentally appropriate care for all youth.
Our commitment is simple: all young people deserve access to quality mental health support—no exceptions.
