NATSAP Responds to MAHA Commission Report with Call for Nuanced, Ethical, and Evidence-Based Mental Health Solutions
The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) acknowledges the urgency highlighted by the MAHA Commission's assessment and awaits further findings with thoughtful attention. While the health and well-being of children across the nation must be prioritized, the issues as outlined in the assessment contributing to chronic disease, mental health challenges, and suicidality are complex and multifaceted.
Rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among youth reflect a broader mental health crisis in this country—one that demands a coordinated, compassionate, and evidence-based response. NATSAP supports the development of a robust mental and behavioral healthcare system grounded in the highest safety standards, trauma-informed and data-driven clinical practices, and unwavering ethical principles.
Every child and family in need of mental health support deserves access to the best possible care. NATSAP and its member programs remain committed to upholding these values while continuing to serve youth with integrity and compassion.
NATSAP will continue to monitor the work of the MAHA Commission closely as next steps unfold, including the development of a comprehensive national strategy and the promotion of gold-standard scientific research. With 82 days remaining for the Commission to deliver the Make Our Children Healthy Again Strategy, NATSAP remains ready to engage in efforts that strengthen child and adolescent mental health and support effective, ethical, and evidence-informed care.
