Chamberlain International School highlights the success of a recent Alumni
By Diane Wilson, Assistant Executive Director - Chamberlain International School
Like many students, Marie arrived at Chamberlain International School after a period of crisis. She was just 16 years old but had already overcome and endured many hurdles in life including multiple living and school placements. While her clinical struggles were clear, there was always an underlying spirit that was seeking a healthier way forward. What Marie possessed was an incredible resilience and the ability to move past struggles, apply the tools she had learned to manage difficult feelings and build tremendous bonds with those around her.
Marie participated in many of the extracurricular opportunities at Chamberlain. She was an active member of our Equestrian Studies program, always excelled in theater arts as part of our alliance with Burtwood Performing Arts Studio and even obtained work experience despite a seemingly insurmountable problem. Marie was unable to obtain her official birth certificate to apply for traditional employment and rather than be deterred, she committed herself to volunteering at the local food pantry, Easter Seals and even work assignments on campus.
What was never in question was Marie’s academic ability and strong work ethic. Marie consistently applied herself to her studies and made up for any lost credits to earn her high school diploma. She successfully applied to the University of Illinois and was accepted. With careful planning and foresight on her part, she successfully transferred to dorm living before the fall semester and is currently successfully enrolled doing very well in her studies. Additionally, Marie engages in many campus activities and clubs including some that she first experienced at Chamberlain like equestrian.
Marie used the resources available to her to reach the goals she set for herself. With guidance of Chamberlain staff and her school district, she was able to successfully navigate the often-difficult maze of post graduate supports for college funding. Importantly, she was also able to reconnect with members of her biological family setting in place those important long-term relationships. Chamberlain is incredibly proud of Marie and all that she has achieved. We look forward to the very bright future that lies ahead for her. Her determination and resilience serve as an inspiration to many who face similar challenges in their educational and personal journeys.
