Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS) is highlighted in the newly published book Boys, A Rescue Plan as an example
of how brain science research on the differences between boys’ and girls’ brains can be applied to support students' growth and development. Authors Michael Gurian and Sean Kullman share neuroscience research confirming what may seem obvious—boys and girls are different. Their brain structures, developmental processes, and hormonal makeup vary significantly, influencing their academic, physical, and social needs.
CCBS is a therapeutic boarding school for boys ages 10 to 15 in grades 5–10, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina. The Three Pillars of their program—A Focus on Family, Nature, and Being Boy-Friendly—help students and their families rediscover hope and optimism for the future.
Cherokee Creek has the distinction of being the first therapeutic boarding school named a “Gurian Model School” by The Gurian Institute. Michael Gurian, a social philosopher, family therapist, and New York Times best-selling author, has extensively researched gender-based brain differences. He is also the co-founder of the Gurian Institute, which provides consulting and training to help boys and girls succeed at school, home, and in the community. His work offers a neurobiology-based framework to support boys’ educational and emotional needs, which CCBS integrates into its curriculum, including:
- Training staff in male brain biology to enhance support & opportunities
- Identifying and addressing learning challenges in adolescent boys
- Designing academic programs tailored to individual learning styles
- Providing personalized mental health support
- Emphasizing outdoor education and nature-based learning
- Incorporating movement and activity into daily routines
- Fostering a close-knit community that encourages brotherhood
- Strengthening family relationships through dedicated programs
According to CCBS Executive Director David LePere, “Understanding brain science has allowed us to create a boy-friendly environment that supports their development academically, therapeutically, and socially. We are committed to helping adolescent boys build confidence, develop their strengths, and embrace their unique gifts. With insights from Michael Gurian and our dedicated CCBS team, we strive to ensure that Cherokee Creek Boys School truly is:
‘A place where boys can be boys and discover what is real and true about themselves and the world around them.’
