NATSAP Encourages Members to Participate in 988's Behavioral Health Crisis Care Guidelines: Public Comment Open
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline have released their 2025 Draft National Guidelines for a Behavioral Health Coordinated System of Crisis Care, and the public comment period is now open. This update builds on previous guidelines and is an essential step in advancing behavioral health crisis care, especially as the country transitions to the 988 Lifeline. The guidelines aim to improve how crisis services are delivered, offering critical guidance to providers, communities, and policymakers alike.
NATSAP strongly supports these guidelines, as they directly benefit our members who provide behavioral health services to youth and families. The National Guidelines 2025 establish clear principles for transforming crisis care systems, emphasizing the need for a coordinated continuum of care that includes prevention, intervention, and recovery services. The guidelines also provide specific recommendations for addressing the unique needs of children and youth in crisis, which aligns with the work our members do in therapeutic settings.
This update offers NATSAP members an invaluable opportunity to engage in shaping the future of behavioral health crisis services. SAMHSA is seeking feedback on areas such as clarity, consistency, and feasibility, and we encourage members to contribute their insights. By participating in the public comment process, NATSAP members can ensure that the guidelines are relevant and practical for real-world application in the field.
The public comment period runs from December 5 to December 15, 2024. To submit your feedback, visit the official SAMHSA form and provide your comments by the deadline. For any questions, contact comment@988crisisttac.org. This is a pivotal moment for NATSAP members to make their voices heard and help guide the future of behavioral health crisis care.
