NATSAP Statement

Dear NATSAP members,

We write to share that there has been a tragic death of a young student at Trails Carolina, one of our member programs.  We extend our deepest condolences to family and loved ones of the student and the community of Trails Carolina, and we hold them in our thoughts and prayers.

In the wake of this loss, we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of care, safety, and professionalism within our member programs. To this end, we support Trails in continuing both internal and external investigations to thoroughly examine the circumstances of this tragedy. We support and encourage them to continue to work closely with accrediting bodies and relevant authorities to ensure a comprehensive and impartial assessment.

NATSAP would like to share some known facts with our members. The student was in the program for less than 24 hours. There are no indications of abuse or mistreatment as per available information. While it's human nature to speculate, we urge caution and sensitivity, especially considering the impact on the family and the ongoing care of other families and students at Trails Carolina.

We reaffirm our dedication to implementing and adhering to best practices for all of our member programs. We recognize the importance of supporting one another through this challenging time and encourage open communication, empathy, and compassion.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. Your input is invaluable as we work together to ensure the well-being and safety of all individuals within our care.

 With heartfelt sympathy and solidarity,

Alec Stone, MA, MPA

NATSAP Executive Director
