NATSAP Advocacy Day Sees Unprecedented Turnout, Bipartisan Advocacy for Mental Health

Washington, D.C. — April 29, 2024 — The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) convened its annual Advocacy Day in the nation's capital on April 17th, 2024, marking a significant milestone with the largest turnout yet. Nearly 85 attendees, representing a diverse array of stakeholders, gathered to champion mental health reform and advocate for legislative support.

The event, which drew participants from across the country, facilitated meetings with 63 congressional offices, where bipartisan efforts took center stage in advancing critical initiatives aimed at improving mental health services nationwide.

Key focal points of the discussions included rallying support for the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act (SICAA) and the Improving Access to Mental Health Services Act of 2023. Participants engaged in constructive dialogue, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced resources and accessibility in mental health care delivery.

NATSAP also encouraged Congress to see it’s drafted legislation on safety standards within residential therapeutic treatment centers, underscoring the organization's commitment to promoting best practices and ensuring the well-being of individuals in therapeutic settings.

Acknowledging exemplary leadership in the field of mental health advocacy, NATSAP presented awards to Senator Ben Ray Luján and Representative Buddy Carter for their steadfast dedication and instrumental contributions to advancing mental health legislation.

Furthermore, a special briefing held in collaboration with Representative David Trone's office underscored the importance of unified bipartisan action in addressing mental health challenges. Rep. Trone was honored with an award in recognition of his unwavering commitment to championing mental health initiatives.

"Advocacy Day serves as a pivotal platform for uniting voices from across the spectrum to drive meaningful change in mental health policy," remarked NATSAP Board President John Singleton. "We are immensely grateful for the overwhelming support and participation, which reflects a shared commitment to prioritizing mental health and well-being."

As NATSAP continues to spearhead efforts to enhance mental health services and promote legislative action, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals, families, and communities toward holistic healing and recovery.
