Prioritizing Youth Mental Health During Back-to-School Season

As students return to school, their mental health needs are more critical than ever. Recent data from SAMHSA highlights alarming trends, with nearly 1 in 5 adolescents reporting a major depressive episode in the past year, along with significant increases in co-occurring substance use issues. These challenges can greatly impact students’ ability to learn and thrive, making it essential to include mental wellness in back-to-school preparations.

NATSAP members are at the forefront of addressing these needs, providing safe and supportive environments where youth can access vital mental health services. By integrating evidence-based practices, our members help students manage stress, build resilience, and overcome challenges like anxiety and depression. The work we do aligns closely with SAMHSA's goals of promoting youth wellness and readiness to learn, both in and out of the classroom.

Families can also play a pivotal role by implementing strategies such as balancing screen time, fostering open communication about social media, and creating supportive routines. NATSAP encourages collaboration between schools, families, and therapeutic programs to ensure that students not only succeed academically but also maintain their mental well-being throughout the school year.

As the new school year begins, let’s prioritize the mental health of our youth. By working together, we can create environments where students feel supported, empowered, and ready to thrive.
